When I entered the Space & Design Strategies program I did not understand what work had been done before the thesis. I also did not understand how the department had changed over time. I tried to look at theses. Projects to find my way. I found an archive that was hard to read: files, without context missing information and materials spread in places. This situation made me wonder about the role of the archive, in the department. The problem was not the amount of work that existed. The way the work was organized and accessed. The archive did not help me understand the program. The archive pushed me to ask students for guidance. This thesis does not try to give a definition of an archive. Instead the thesis looks at how a student experiences an archive when the student has to work with the archive. I work with the SDS archive read theory texts and look at case studies. I examine how archiving can go beyond just storing things and become part of practice. The outcome of this work is not a finished solution but a proposal that grows from specific encounters, frustrations, and decisions.
