Abstract (Deutsch)
Die Hysterie war eine Diagnose, welche einem ständigen Evolutionsprozess unterworfen war. Beginnend in der Antike bis zum Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts war die Medizin stets gespalten und schrieb dem Leiden verschiedene Ursachen zu. Auf den Neurologen Jean-Martin Charcot übte die Krankheit eine starke Faszination aus; in dem Leiden glaubte der Arzt auch einen künstlerischen Aspekt zu erkennen. Schon bald sollte sich sein Schüler Sigmund Freud von ihm abwenden und sich gemeinsam mit dem Internisten Josef Breuer alternativen Therapieansätzen der Hysterie in Form von als innovativ geltenden „Redekuren“ widmen. Welches mediale Nachleben das Krankheitsbild in ausgewählten exorzistischen Horrorfilmen im Hinblick auf vom Teufel besessene Frauen hinterlassen hat und inwiefern es eine Rekurrenz eines in Vergessenheit geratenen stilisierten Bildes von Weiblichkeit und hysterischer Psychomotorik bildet, wird vor diesem Hintergrund näher untersucht. Zum Schluss wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Potenziale die Hysterie für eine weibliche Selbstdefinition und Emanzipation anbietet.
Abstract (Englisch)
Hysteria was a diagnosis which was subject to a constant evolutionary process. From antiquity until the beginning of the 20th century, medicine was divided concerning a precise diagnosis and attributed various causes to the disease. The neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot was fascinated by the disease; he believed the ailment to have an artistic aspect. Soon his student Sigmund Freud was to turn away from him and, together with the internist Josef Breuer, he devoted himself to alternative therapeutic approaches to hysteria by forms of "talking cures," which were considered innovative. The media obituary of the clinical picture in selected exorcist horror films in relation to women possessed by the devil and the extent to which it forms a recurrence of a stylized image of femininity and hysterical movement and expression that has fallen into oblivion will be examined more closely in this thesis. Finally, the question of which possible prospects hysteria does offer for female self-definition and emancipation will be highlighted.
